CNN —Scientists have voted against a proposal to declare a new geological epoch called the Anthropocene to reflect how profoundly human activity has altered the planet. The vote followed a 15-year process to select a geological site that best captures humanity’s impact on the planet. Some experts argued that the start of the Anthropocene could be better defined in other ways, such as the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. “This is the commission’s expert group for this interval of geological time and we are bound by its decision. Regardless of whether the term is officially classified as a geological epoch, Anthropocene is already widely in use, Cohen noted.

Even classics can go out of print, but the war on books is never out of style. I was as opposed to that war at the age of 17 as I am at age 70. But there’s something I failed to see in my youth that I recognize today: the one piece of common ground between the book banners and me. We both believe that books matter, that they have the power to change a young person’s life. Access to the books was restricted, yes, but no one was calling for their removal.

Bank of America has named multiple European "top stocks" it says are of "good value, low risk" and "high quality." All of them turned up on "recession screens" for July, in a market BofA described as a being in a recession style cycle. The euro zone entered recession in the first quarter of the year, according to economic data released last month. Energy companies the bank named include Shell , German company EON and Italian firm Enel . During recession cycles, investors have benefited from being overweight on value stocks rather than growth stocks, as well as on stocks with strong balance sheets and lower risk, BofA added, citing research based on a testing period between 1992 and 2003.

CNN —Scientists have identified the geological site that they say best reflects a proposed new epoch called the Anthropocene — a major step toward changing the official timeline of Earth’s history. “We’ve moved into this new Earth state and that should be defined by a new geological epoch,” Waters added. On Tuesday, the scientists announced the geological site — Crawford Lake in Ontario, Canada — that best captures the geological impact of the Anthropocene, according to their research. Annual sediment samples from the Crawford Lake site have revealed geochemical traces of nuclear bomb testing, researchers have confirmed. The alpha spectrometry output shown on the screen indicates the presence of plutonium in a Crawford Lake drill core sample.

The researchers discovered that the molecular fossils indicating the presence of these primitive eukaryotes were commonplace in rocks spanning from about 1.6 billion years ago to 800 million years ago. "It is a lost world in the sense that we had not been able to see or detect them - although there was an entire world of them. It is a lost world also because these forms are now entirely extinct, Brocks added. The oldest of the rocks bearing these fossils were unearthed in the remote Outback of northern Australia, near Darwin. Scientists long were puzzled about the seeming absence of molecular fossils from this time span indicative of primitive eukaryotes.

Goldman Sachs named the three global companies it expects to benefit from the German government's plan to spend nearly half a trillion euros on renewable energy infrastructure. The proposed measures include a 2030 target to have 80% renewable energy and cheaper financing for developers of clean energy sources through green bonds. Goldman Sachs has estimated that this German plan will create investment opportunities worth nearly 400 billion euros ($440 billion) in clean energy and power grid infrastructure. RWE Goldman Sachs said RWE , a renewable energy generator, could accelerate the development of clean energy projects and capture a market share equivalent to its current installed base globally. Goldman Sachs added that the U.S.'s IRA and Europe's REPowerEU initiative would also be a tailwind for the company's growth plans.
Tesla published its Q1 production and deliveries data Sunday, reporting a record number of deliveries. The electric vehicle manufacturer reported production of about 440,000 vehicles, and just under 423,000 vehicle deliveries, the closest figure to sales that Tesla reports, in the first quarter. The car maker fell short of analyst expectations from FactSet — an average of 432,000 deliveries reported Friday — cited in the Wall Street Journal and CNBC. The Treasury Department also recently released new regulations for electric vehicle tax credits, which are set to go into effect later this month. They could impact the demand and affordability for Teslas and other electric vehicles as certain models become ineligible for $7,500 tax credits.

BERLIN, Oct 24 (Reuters) - German utility Uniper is shutting half the office space in its headquarters and lowering temperatures in areas remaining open to save gas, it told Rheinische Post on Monday, as it struggles to stay afloat even after being nationalised. The company has switched off all devices and lamps in 50% of its office space in Duesseldorf, stopped cleaning and lowered the temperature to 14 degrees, the lowest it can be without damaging the building, the spokesperson told Rheinische Post. In offices where people are working, temperatures were being lowered to 20 degrees, the report said. The Rheinische Post report said E.ON (EON.UL) was also taking steps to reduce energy consumption in its buildings by at least 20% through measures like switching off lighting of logos and turning off hot water where possible. Where’s the Permitting Bill, Senator Manchin?

If a week is a long time in politics, then it has been an eon since Sen. Joe Manchin cut his supersecret permitting deal with Democratic leaders. Yet Mr. Manchin still hasn’t told the public—or even many of his Senate colleagues—what exactly he negotiated. To re-use a famous phrase from Nancy Pelosi, does Congress have to pass the bill to find out what’s in it? Mr. Manchin said last week that the text of his deal probably will be “released in the CR,” according to the Hill. The permitting changes might be unveiled at the last minute, as pressure to avoid a government shutdown peaks.
